On a NASCAR note: I am wondering after reading an article on nascar.com today, what would the championship results if the chase was first implemented? Would we have Petty and Earnhardt on top?

If anyone has some time on there hands it would be interesting to see what it would be. Take the points with 10 races to go and implement the chase format. I think we would have no shining stars. Is that what NASCAR wants?

A nice thing to do by Race Fans.

When you are making out your Christmas card list this year, please include the following:

A Recovering American soldier c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center 6900 Georgia Avenue, NW Washington, D.C. 20307-5001

If you approve of the idea, please pass it in your e-mail lists. (Which I did) I hope you do also. These guys/girls need all of the good cheers and will that we can give them.

It would be nice to Berlin Raceway back to having the stands and pits full again, it would be great if the sportsman could start off as Kalamazoo does with 6 tires so in some chance you need 1 you have it. The payout is also enticing as well as the point money, and yes they also treat their drivers the same, no favorites.

Week 3 for the Go Cart league is posted.

Again what a great night of racing. I have not seen 3 way racing in a long time on this track. In Fact I can't remember the last time I saw 3 wide racing.

The adjustments that we are doing seem to help everyone out to make it fair every week. It has really become a Drivers race.

To Tim Anstett. Glad to hear that you had a rewarding event for Mary Free Bed. Tried thinking of every way possible that we could attend and contribute with our car too but it just was not possible, your cause and effort for Mary Free Bed are something that show the backbone of racers and teams reaching out with appreciation for the interest and support of every single fan. Glad to hear that it was a success for a really good cause. Will do my best again to attend in your spring event. Also, your recognizing the people who helped you pull it off like Jackson Walker is real special. He and the others are real racing people. We should all keep that in mind as we set up for 2008. You did a BIG THING and should be proud... Rod McClarren SS-15.

George I just want to thank everyone that helped out last Saturday. I have had multiple THANK YOU's from patients and family members this morning and want to give a big thanks myself to all that made it a great day. Tom DeVette-- as always great shots. Bill Chrisman for his donation of die-cast cars and trading cards- we gave these out to the kids during the week as a promo to the event on Saturday. Jackson Walker for helping all of us out loading, unloading, and setting the cars up. George Munniksma, Dan VanderMolen, and Eric Bair for taking the time out on a beautiful day to bring their cars out.

Thanks again everyone - you really did make a beautiful day even brighter for a lot of people We will look at doing it again in the spring.

Don't know what track most of you are talking about as far as tube vs. Camaro? But the fastest Kazoo LLM's the before they axed the class were often Camaro's. Lyons, Payne, Hertiz, Currier, etc. beat many tube clips on 8' tires for years down there. You just need to know how to set them up.

I'm not disagreeing with what was said about the "older" cars as far as building them from the bone yard. You have to look at it this way though, the advances in racing tech have come a long way for alot of reasons. Safety being one of the most important. Yes, with innovation comes added expense but so does trying to get parts that are virtually going "extinct". I'm sure there are not to many Camaros out there that we can scavenge for parts these days! The other side of innovation is neccessity, take the fabbed front clip we can run. It's a Camaro clone do to the depletion of the once sought after stock front clip. I think that all of these guys mentioned actually contributed to the sport thousands fold, not in any way ruined it or tried to.

"If you listed the top ten people who've made short track racing what is TODAY, Ed Howe makes the list heads down"... Thank you for making my point FOR me. Ever since it became necessary to purchase an aftermarket chassis to remain competitive, the modern day late model has steadily become more and more sophisticated, and increasingly expensive. All I know is that when the cars were home-builts, you had a pit full of them on a typical Saturday night. These days you're lucky to get a dozen... 'Not blaming Howe personally, but sometimes innovation means added expense, and added expense mean smaller fields...

If you listed the top 10 people who made short track racing what it is today nationwide, Ed Howe makes the list hands down.

The goal of using old LM chassis's vs. OEM chassis's will not stop innovation. A 77' Monte chassis is a 77' Monte chassis. You think PCR, Howe, Hamke, FLF, Randercar LM chassis's are clones? Look at Kazoo's new Sportsmen rules, Gary is doing just that. Making any LM chassis legal with a few modifications. That class next year will see more innovations than any OEM frame class has ever seen.

Yes, Denny is still testing for Hoosier. He is a Hoosier Distributor out of South Bend In.

He still tests when Hoosier calls on him. I see him at M40 Speedway several times per year.

He is also one of my all time favorites. And he is the all time FAVORITE of my brother in law from Iowa. I finally introduced Denny to my brother in law, and it will be a day(my brother in law) will never forget, as Denny gave his some autographed photos and one of his old trophies. You guys are talking about the days when a Camaro chassis/body could be had in the junk yard for $200 complete. Those days are gone. With tracks closing every day it seems, the most successful seem to be the ones that hand down tires, chassis's and parts from class to class. The tracks with 3-4 classes of cars that can't move up or down with simple changes is what is killing many off.

I miss the days when many of the home-built cars became just as legendary as their drivers. (Dunshee's little Buick Special, Benson's White Wedge supermod or his controversial Chevelle, the Bingo 151, the Strip Teaser, the Crap Shooter, The Lone Merc, etc, etc, etc... Nowadays you just order a frame from one manufacturer, a body from another one, your engine from somebody else, and put the thing together like a big cookie-cutter kit. God-forbid you try something DIFFERENT. Do so and you're ripped to shreds in the tech line. Ever since Ed Howe "ruined" it for everybody by introducing his tube chassis, there hasn't been a buzz about any new car to hit the track at Berlin in years... Booooooring...

Of course the new technology in chassis building is much safer than yesteryears innovations. It's just nice to look back sometimes at what we started with. Like I tried to point out to 174 a day or 2 ago, I bought the chassis I'm currently running for a grand. It was ALL stock front with a 4 link in the rear. I changed everything and it probably cost me close to a grand to update it. Now, it's gotten so outta hand. It now has a fabbed rear clip with outboard shocks and springs, 3 link of course...etc. The front clip will be put on soon. It would kill me to part with it unless it was wrecked beyond repair! I mean just the bolt on parts alone costs more than a grand! That's why it's so expensive....all the shiny go fast goodies! And you are always updating and upgrading.

I love it... Talk about a contradiction in terms: A "street stock" with an aftermarket tube chassis?! What the heck is "street stock" about THAT?! Good grief. If these are supposed to be the good ol' days, why do we long so much for the way things used to be?

Street stocks are headed to a tube chassis. It's already happened at several tracks. Cheaper to take an old LM chassis and stick a low power motor in it than to modify a 25-30 car and also much safer. What is the difference if you spend $3-$4K on a old LM roller and stick on a 5 star body and mild 355 w/2bbl? More tracks need to go this way. The Pure-Sport Stocks in the area are over $15K in some cases.

That sucks about the 12 Late Model races in 2008 how many races are the other classes going to run? it is not fair to the LM if the other classes get to run more than they do it is just not cool!! Because after all the fans pretty much come to see the Lm and the Super Stock not that the others aren't good either but they want to see the big dogs!

That's definitely something I'm sure alot of racers miss......You could take a car out of the junk yard and strip it out and put a cage in it..POOF instant racecar! I mean look at the cost of bodies these days.....upwards of $3,000.00! My first dirt street stock was a 78 Malibu that I stripped out, had a cage put in, my friend Marty rebuilt a 305 for it and we went racing on the 1/4 dirt track back home! I maybe had $2,000.00 into the whole thing! I even did pretty good with it when we ran it, always top 10 car. Those were the days!!!

Dearest George:

Thank you for letting me know that your lovely bride is making progress everyday. I like the fact that she has gotten feisty with you - she's a lady, but a sure sign that she's on her way back. I am still amazed that she has put up with you for 44 years - really? .... When I first met you both, it seemed that we were just kids. Okay, Joe and I were kids, you were young adults.

I read the e-mail entries when I have that moment of quiet peace while on the road - traveling in three countries with 40 complete strangers, trust me, a sense of peace and home that your site offers is a God send.

Here are my thoughts to the writer who wrote about the Marc Times.

A long standing tradition at a crossroads - wisdom of the past - how does it compete and sustain itself in the technology driven world that exists?

Do we sit back and let a legacy of tradition go or is it important to do something?

As the Marc Times embraces the crossroad of change, the talent and knowledge that lies within this list might help them survive in this technology driven world. I don't have the answer how. I do know that there is no other community so driven to preserve racing's beginnings.

I am hopeful the Marc Times will find the resources necessary to maintain its literary existence and prosper.

George, it's still the good stuff.

Hope to see you soon.

Lorraine Bush
Hi Kid - yup it has been a long time. Just the term "Young Adults" made me grin. The Marc Times gave me my first chance to say what I saw and felt about racing with a column called The Rumor Mill and Pat Beebe was a taskmaster with her columnists and their grammar and sentence structure etc. and I was better for it. I think I did it for 10 or 12 years before I moved to radio. But the Marc Times is a tradition that should not die. I know the Web makes it seem like a neat way to get free advertising but the true race fan likes to have all the info in print that he can take with him and refer to for schedules and directions and Phone #s etc. I too would hate to see it cease operations, so I would hope a young, aggressive salesperson would take the challenge and help build it back up to past levels. The tracks need to help, I know a lot of them climbed up the ladder with the ads they placed and now they feel they don't need it as much. They do, they just need someone to sit down and explain why to them. I could continue, but Dick said it all in his 5th Turn column, "We will try to make it survive and put it on life support somehow - HELP !!!"  Anyone interested in can call him with ideas at 616-874-1315. They will discuss partners, a big sponsor or a GOOD salesman. If you can help, call. Take care Lorraine and say Hi to Joe and the kids for us. George P.S. Just think if Dick has nothing to do - poor Kathy. Lets Keep Up ...With The Times and lets help it prosper again.

Too bad we can't return to the days of building race cars out of STOCK cars, instead of being forced to buy pre-fabbed chassis, suspensions, fiberglass or aluminum bodies, pro-built engines, etc, etc... It seemed like EVERYBODY was havin' a lot more fun with a lot less expense back then....

Not sure which is worse: Only 12 late model shows, but running on real racing rubber... or the normal number of shows, but trying to race on tires so hard they throw sparks. I guess a limited schedule WILL open up more Saturday nights to do something besides going to Berlin. No offense to the support divisions, but I'm not makin' that 100 mile round-trip on the nights the late models are M.I.A. I'm not sure how a reduced schedule is supposed to increase car counts. Will there still be a points championship? Oh if we could just turn back time to when the stock cars were actually made out of STOCK cars, and the pits were overflowing...

'Just received and read the Oct. 9th edition of the MARC Times. What I read in Dick Beebe's 5th Turn column was heartbreaking. It sounds like after 45 years of continuous publication, his beloved paper may be about to go under. His explanation? "Money, money, money". In this modern age of "everything-electronic", he's just not getting the advertisers he once did. The multitude of tracks that used to place weekly ads detailing their upcoming shows have simply quit doing so. I can remember buying my first MARC Times at Hartford back in the mid-sixties. 'Read the thing till it disintegrated in my hands. 'Been a subscriber ever since. What a shame. 'Just ANOTHER example of how these are NOT the "good ol' days" for this sport..... Well put. G

The four-bangers would be a good way to get started. (If Berlin has the brains to bring 'em back next season) Not only are they inexpensive, but it would be a great way to get track time before moving up a class....

4 tire deal depends on the payout. Those tires will cost around $120 each. Is Berlin paying $480 to start to cover those LM teams?

Can't wait for the 2008 season at Berlin. With 4 tires (3035-3045) should be much better racing and less damage to a lot of good race cars. I would love to hear what other people think about the 4 tire deal, the guest book has been thin lately. There is also the new Forum to go to and try this same question. See above or HERE

174, I'm highly doubting that you will find a Berlin sportsman for $1,000.00. I'm not trying to belittle you, but if that's all ya got, save some more up and then buy a car. It is probably wise to save up at least $5,000.00, and that's a little on the light side. But who knows, head out to Ionia on the 21st, maybe you'll find a deal of a lifetime or maybe a chassis for a grand! You find out quick that most divisions are fueled by MONEY!!!!! I bet you can find a pretty good 4 cyl for that dough!

KALAMAZOO RACERS SWAP SELLING OUT FAST

The Kalamazoo Racers Swap Meet will be held on November 10th at the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds inside the heated Hazel Gray Building. We would like to encourage everyone who wants an indoor booth to register soon, as half of the indoor booths have already been sold for this event. Printable booth reservation forms are available by visiting our web site  www.kalamazooracersswapmeet.com

We anticipate that the remaining indoor booth spaces will sell out well before the day of the event. For this reason, we have secured a large paved parking area outside the building to accommodate late registering vendors who would still like to participate.

Door prizes will be given out at 1pm. Several sponsors have donated some very special items for the drawing. For a list of current door prizes and booth info and entry forms please see the door prize page at the web site above.

Good point about the busses Rob. At least towards the end of the season they started running them last on the program. Those that enjoyed watching them could stay if they were so inclined, and those that didn't could head for the gates. (not to mention the fact that the REAL racers no longer had to run over all the parts 'n pieces they left behind) I'm a racing purist, but after watching them from the pits while waiting to cross the track on a few occasions, I have to admit I was pretty entertained! What the heck... if they put butts in the stands and help what's left of our track to survive, go ahead and run 'em... (Just keep runnin' 'em LAST!

Are we ever gonna hear the end of the bus racing saga. For criminy sakes........Do you know how many tracks all over this great nation have some kind of bus racing show? I've seen figure 8 bus racing on Speed and ESPN. Just think, this latest rashin of crap because someone said they enjoyed a family night out watching the busses at Berlin, a night called "BUS MANIA" which means the buses were a featured event, NOT race cars!!!

Buses should be used to transport passengers, their not meant for racing. What's next.... limo racing? Oh wait a minute... why not let them run motorcycles too? The crowd would LOVE watching them crash!! I mean come on, that's the only reason they go is to watch the buses in the first place is for crashes. It's certainly not for the competition they provide. I guess maybe I'm stupid or something because I just don't get it. A once top notch racing facility, racing buses. What am I missing???

Maybe you could do a update on her once in a while on the site. Bill Thanks Bill for the concern. She is home, starting to walk a little more each day and eating a little. Still not able to leave the house or drive, but doing a lot better than 3 weeks ago. Thanks to your family and all the others that have kept her in their prayers, and sent notes etc. It is really special to us. Thank you all. G

Maybe Mike can fill us in on how it is going and who is good and who is the team to beat and answer your questions at the same time. I am going to try hard to make it next week. G

This Monday October 8th is the opening night for the DMX Motorsports Challenge over at Craig's Cruisers on Clyde Park near 54th.

Look at this as a reminder to those of you who are already Registered. I would hate for you to not show up and get behind on the points. In the past the points race is so close that one night could set you pretty far back.

For those of you who have not registered yet. You better decide soon we only have days left till the Silicon hits the track and the Carts hit high speed.

Driver sign is at 6pm til 630pm cost is $20 for 3 qualifying races and a main feature race for the top 50 Carts.

This is a 6 week League running from October 8th to Nov. 12th....

See you all this Monday Night for the first race of the DMX Motorsports Challenge.

Looks like Gary has plans for triple crown type of series similar to Dixie, Owosso, Toledo, and A/C.

There was "Super Shoe" rumor of 3 track LM series involving Kazoo and two other tracks for next season. They are popular on eastside and attract some 25-30 cars per race.

THE ROCK has been saved...... . . More than 40 years after its first race, the North Carolina Speedway -- often referred to as The Rock -- was sold at auction today. . Andy Hillenburg, a former racer who owns a driving school, submitted the winning bid of $4 million for the North Carolina Speedway when it went on the auction block today.

Hillenburg has said that he wants to bring a lower-tiered racing event to the former NASCAR speedway. NASCAR abandoned the track in 2004.

Owner Bruton Smith, a Charlotte billionaire and speedway tycoon, unloaded the 250-acre piece of racing history, which is north of Rockingham, about 100 miles southwest of Raleigh.

The speedway has stood practically empty since Smith's Speedway Motorsports Inc. shifted its last scheduled race to a track in Fort Worth, Texas.

Richmond County leaders tried to persuade NASCAR to continue racing in Rockingham, but their efforts were to no avail. When NASCAR would not relent, they began lending support to Hillenburg, and at one point tried to persuade Smith's representatives to forgo the auction and negotiate directly with him. ____________________________________

I still can't believe it sold for $4 million.

Congratulations to Terry Jr. and the entire Senneker team for winning the main event in Columbus. You and your team should be very proud in winning one of the biggest late model races in the nation. You join a list of winners of Butch Miller, Joe Bush, John Doering , Fred Campbell, along with the winners of five of the last six races Rick Sexton , Ross Meeuwsen, Lee Anderson, and Brian Campbell all from Michigan most from west Michigan.

ps. Sara you are correct in the team work that goes on between Michigan teams when we travel out of state, we all try to help each other as much as we can. we are competitive as hell on the track, but off the track we work together, so all of us can run well when away from home!

Once again the hardware came back to West Michigan way to go guys!!!!

KALAMAZOO SPEEDWAY SUPER SHOE NATIONALS

WHAT A WEEKEND!

Kenny Head and Brandon Lyons put on a show that anyone in attendance (that didn't leave early) will not forget any time soon!

The racing was great, the parties were a blast, and the weather could not have been any better! Who will ever forget the year the horses got loose? A huge Thank You to all the fans that helped keep the parking lot mild all weekend long.

It was fun announcing my first Super Shoe! I appreciate all the nice comments about it over the weekend. Getting to meet a lot of the drivers while going around getting sponsor and driver information was a neat experience. I had fun working with Steve Roden and Andy Jach all weekend, and appreciate Gary Lindahl stopping by to call a couple races as well as Shawn from the Springport Speedway. Gary's "been there, done that", and the Springport newbie is on his way! Thanks gang for all the help!

Congratulations to all the winners of the heat races Saturday night, the last chance races and features on Sunday, as well as the 2007 "Super Shoe" Kenny Head!

Congratulations to all the drivers from West Michigan!

This weekend, at Columbus, was my first "real" experience at an outside track.

It was a huge reality check for me to see how well the West Michigan drivers performed in comparison to Ohio. Out of the top 10 Qualifiers 7 were from MI. That is something to be proud of!

And...I have to tell you the teamwork between all the Michigan drivers and their crews was absolutely amazing! I saw many people borrowing parts and sharing food. I even drove a drive shaft down for VanHaitsma. We even received lots of help from some of the Ohio drivers. It was great!

I think that the Boyne Cars would had been a force to be reckoned with if they had not become entangled in the crashes at the start.

Congrats to Terry Senneker, Steve Needles, and Joe Bush for their top 3 finish. Great Job to Rick Sexton for finishing the race after Qualifying in from the last chance! (I can't remember where he finished)

All these drivers are true Role Models! We should all be Proud!

Now THAT was a great night at Berlin! I was so thrilled to see both a full pit and packed grandstands... especially considering all the other big specials going on in the area at the same time. I'm not tryin' to knock our regular fare of late models, pro stocks and sportsman, but watching those open-wheelers last night reminded me of what REAL racing is all about! Talk about bein' on the edge of your seat! Let's see... Berlin replaced the supers and sprints with the "taxi cabs" way back in '68. Maybe they should consider bringing them back in '08! Can you imagine that kind of a show every WEEK?! Speaking of the door cars, I'm not trying to start some big debate Rob. I was just saying that while Thomas is running so well, it'd be neat to see him try some other venues besides Berlin and Kazoo. I can't believe he wouldn't run equally well at Dixie, Columbus, Toledo, etc...

Geo, It was a GREAT Open Wheel Show at Berlin last night, Our local boys didn't fair well, but it was a great show anyway, and a good crowd, maybe Berlin will have to switch to shows like these in order to have good crowds every week again?????????????? I guess I didn't realize Nick the Photographer was so young till I saw him in a picture with one of the cars displayed out front for the fans to check out last night. If he is this good now, think how good he will later, GREAT JOB NICK. Bill

Hmmm, I'm not wrong to a point......If he's won at K-zoo and Berlin, that makes him a 2 track horse....lol!!!!!!! And I'm sure everyone will let me know the specifics like, the Benson chassis has only won at Berlin....it was the FLF chassis at K-zoo or the Port City....yadayada. All I was stating is he hasn't just won at Berlin!!!! So what if I'm wrong....wouldn't be the first time right? Oh my don't take my birthday away!!!!

Brian won it honestly if you look at final points he was 1st in points. He also finished no worse than 5th in a feature all year and had multiple fast times this year so I think it was a well deserved championship for him.

Does anyone think it was very disgraceful how the track officials treated Lee Van Dyk last week? Tillama will never know if he really could have won it honestly. If they would have cautioned the heat race while Lee was trying to get his car running it might have been a legal win. It should not have mattered if his car was in the grass on the inside of the track or off the backstretch, they should have started the race over with him in the back of the field. It is no wonder that there are not many fans in the stands. It was the most interesting battle of the night for points and they took it away from the fans.

Don't know if that rocket of his would run as good elsewhere as it does at Berlin, but I'd love to see the Tomster travel to some of these late season specials... I'm sure the folks from the east side and those out-of-state would love a chance to watch this guy, who's victory lane photo is in every racing paper pretty much every week!

Morning everyone. I have had a good response to our day at Mary Free Bed. I am scheduling the event for Saturday October 20th, at 330 pm. I have 4 cars already committed, and have room for a couple of more if anyone is interested---no late models yet- would be nice to have 1 or 2 so people can see the differences in the cars. Send me an e-mail if you want to come out and make the day of some sick kids....and adults. Tim Anstett

GREAT story by Mr. Verash on the history of the supermodifieds. In this modern era of cloning, where virtually EVERY other form of motorsports, from Indy cars to NASCAR stockers, from sprint cars to east coast modifieds are ruled, regulated, and templated into being identical to each another, the supermodified remains the last surviving division where innovation and creativity are WELCOMED, not restricted. Do yourself a favor Saturday night and check out those bad-ass methanol breathers in the pits. NO TWO EXACTLY ALIKE. How refreshing...

I'm sure the fair board gets some cut of the income at Berlin so as long as they are still getting paid they won't pull the plug on anyone. If they haven't given the Whitecaps the boot I can't see they will give someone with racing in their blood the boot. Tim Steele would be a good owner he has his head in the right places now. You can tell by how the partnership with Johnny is going!

Berlin Fairgrounds was left to Wright Township many, many years ago. It is governed by a Fair board that makes the decisions regarding leasing, etc. It is not a county fairground. I don't think the fair board could terminate a lease without a real good reason. The raceway lease is the best source of revenue for the fair board.

A lot of hidden costs at Berlin. You would have to assume several financial liabilities and on top of that a county fair board can shut you down in a heart beat. Major risk management down there.

I may be wrong, but I don't think anyone can actually BUY Berlin Raceway... Isn't it still owned by the Fair Board? I think the closest you can come to purchasing it is to lease the right to operate it. Either way, it would be nice to get some real RACING people back in control of the
